CNC Machining Process for a mold

CNC Machining is a comprehensive process usually used as the final step to get the precise dimensions during the whole manufacturing procedure of a metal part.

Turning

Lathe turning is a part of the mechanical machining procedure, and there are two main types of processing.

  1. Fix the cutting tool and turn the unshaped workpiece in rotation.
  2. Fix the workpiece and rotate it at high speed, but move the turning tool (tool holder) laterally and longitudinally.

Lathe machining is mainly workable for turning shafts, discs, sleeves and other workpieces with rotary surfaces, such as internal and external cylindrical surfaces, conical surfaces, formed rotary surfaces and end faces. And the lathe turning can also process threaded bodies.

And drill bits, reamers, taps, and knurling tools are also available on the lathe for a corresponding machining process. The lathe turning techniques are the most widely used in machinery manufacturing and repairing factories among the various machining procedures.

Milling

CNC machines can perform machining of complex rotary shapes. We need to fix the workpiece during the milling process, using a high-speed rotating milling cutter to go over the blank and cut out the desired shape and features.

Conventional milling more often worked on workpieces with simple profile features such as contours and slots. And CNC milling machines can perform machining of complex shapes. For example, a Milling and Reaming center can perform 3-axis or multi-axis machining on molds, inspection tools, fixtures, thin-walled complex surfaces, prostheses, blades, etc.

Boring & Reaming

Boring refers to the further processing of forged, cast or drilled holes. Boring can enlarge the hole diameter, improve the accuracy, reduce the surface roughness, and better correct the original hole axis skew. The boring process on the CNC machining center is to carry out the expansion or refinement of the original hole on the steel parts. And with this process, we can improve the holes’ co-axiality, cylindricity, and surface smoothness. Therefore, boring is commonly used as a high precision machining method in the final process.

Reaming is a method of removing a thin metallic layer from the inner wall of a hole with a reamer. It can improve the hole’s dimensional accuracy and surface quality. And reaming is one of the finishing methods for holes and is widely used in mass production. As a matter of fact, for smaller holes, reaming is a more economical and practical machining method compared to internal grinding and precise boring.
