So, what is a sheet metal stamping process?

Metal stamping is a manufacturing process that uses a series of tools and dies to shape sheet metal into a dimensional workpiece. It is a very efficient way of forming sheet metal. The workers only need to put the flat sheet metal into the stamping dies mounted on a press, and then each stroke of the machine will form one part.

And the stamping process is also known as pressing. It includes several sheet-metal forming manufacturing processes, such as punching, blanking, flanging, trimming, coining, etc.

Metal stamping is a process applied to many applications across a wide range of industries. Some industries require the electrical or thermal conductivity of beryllium copper in aerospace, electrical, and defense industries, or the high strength application of steel and its many alloys for the automotive industry.

The industries most commonly used metal stamping processes include Aerospace, Agriculture, Home appliances, Automotive, Construction, Electronics, Lawn care and equipment, Lighting, Medical equipment, Plumbing, Power tools, Small engine, etc.

Sinoway offers deep-drawing processing services and custom deep-drawn sheet metal products.

With the heaviest deep drawing press of 3000 tons and other deep drawing production lines, we can manufacture most deep drawing products, including the truck body parts. And from the 1990s, Sinoway started the deep-drawing processing services and keeps for more than 20 years. And our custom sheet metal deep-drawn stamping parts serve a wide variety of industries, and we got excellent reviews from our customers.

So, what is a sheet metal deep drawing process?

The deep drawing process is a kind of stamping process that uses molds to shape the flat metal blanks into various hollow workpieces or form other shapes from the existing open hollow parts.

In the process of deep drawing, the convex die keeps going down, and making the flat metal blank on the concave die shrink and gradually be pulled into the gap between the convex and concave dies to form a straight wall. While the area under the convex die becomes the bottom of the deep drawing part, the flat blank will be transformed into the shape we want by the end of the deep drawing process. The deep drawing die should not have sharp edges, but a specific radius is needed, and the gap between the convex and concave die should be slightly larger than the blank metal thickness.

deep drawing process

We can make sheet metal components barrel-shaped, gradient-shaped, spherical, conical, parabolic, and other rotating body parts through the deep drawing process.

Commercial applications of the deep drawing sheet metal components and products often involve complex geometries with straight sides and radii. And the most common industrial usages of deep drawing processes include Automotive body and structural parts, Aircraft components, Utensils, White goods, etc.

So, what is a metal bending process?

Bending is a kind of re-shaping process using a press brake on the sheet metal components, and it is one of the most commonly used sheet metal fabrication operations. With this process, the equipment will force the workpiece to deform at a certain angle.

During the bending process, on the press brake, the material of the sheet metal part to be formed is placed flat on the bottom mold with a V groove, then the other die block will press the workpiece into the mold to form the shape out with a certain angle. And due to the materials’ spring-back property, the metal sheet must be over-bent to achieve the proper bend angle.

sheet metal bending process & services

We usually use the bending process to form shapes like boxes, enclosures, U shapes, V shapes, etc.

Only very few products require completely flat sheet metals so that we can see the bending sheet metal components and products in almost all the industrial fields. Commercial applications of parts made by the metal bending process often involve both simple and complex geometries with certain angles. And the most common usages of metal bending processes include Automotive body and structural parts, Aircraft components, Utensils, White goods, Construction metal parts, Furniture components, Types of Brackets, etc.

Sinoway offers CNC laser cutting services and custom sheet metal products made through the laser cutting process.

To meet our customers’ increasingly diversified production needs and enrich our sheet metal parts’ manufacturing lines, we added a new CNC laser cutting production facility in 2005. As a result, our sheet metal production can meet a broader range of customers’ needs, including the laser cutting service. We can produce orders for a wider variety of products in smaller quantities at a lower cost.

So, what is a sheet metal laser cutting process?

Laser cutting is a thermal cutting method that uses a focused high power density laser beam to irradiate the sheet metal products. And while the irradiated material rapidly melts, vaporizes, ablates, or reaches the ignition point, the molten material will be blown away with the high-speed airflow coaxial to the beam to achieve the purpose of cutting the workpiece apart.

Most laser cutting machines are CNC controlled or made into cutting robots. As a precision processing method, the laser cutting process can cut almost all materials, including thin metal sheets in two dimensions or three dimensions.

There are three main types of lasers used in laser cutting:
1. The CO2 laser is suited for cutting, boring, and engraving.
2. The neodymium(Nd) laser is appropriate for boring, where high energy but low repetition are required.
3. The neodymium yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser is proper for boring and engraving, where very high power is needed.

In automobile manufacturing, laser cutting technology for 3D spatial curves of small car roofs and windows is the primary option. Germany’s Volkswagen uses a laser with 500W to cut intricate thin body panels and various curved parts.

In the aerospace field, laser cutting technology is the preferred process to cut unique aerospace materials, such as titanium alloys, aluminum alloys, nickel alloys, chrome alloys, stainless steel, beryllium oxide, composite materials, plastics, ceramics, and quartz. The aerospace parts processed by laser cutting include engine flame barrel, titanium alloy thin-walled magazine, aircraft frame, titanium alloy skin, long wing truss, tailplane wall plate, main helicopter rotor, space shuttle ceramic heat insulation tile, etc.

Laser cutting and forming technology also have a wide range of applications in the field of non-metallic materials. It can cut high hardness, brittle materials, such as silicon nitride, ceramics, quartz, etc. It can also cut and process flexible materials, such as fabric, paper, plastic plates, rubber, etc. For example, laser for clothing cutting can save 10% to 12% of clothing materials and improve the efficiency of more than three times.

To complete the whole sheet metal products’ manufacturing, we usually need several processes worked together, for example, cutting materials with the laser cutting process, bending the blanks at certain angles, and forming the sheet metal products with stamping or deep drawing processes.
